What is Madison's dual language Program (Spanish/English)?
Dual Language enrichment education is a proven program in which native English-speaking children and native Spanish speaking children are educated in both English and Spanish. Reading and writing is taught primarily in the child’s native language through 2nd grade. After 2nd grade, reading and writing is taught in both languages. Beginning in Kindergarten, mathematics is primarily taught in English and science and social studies is taught in Spanish. One teacher at each grade level is a native or nearly native Spanish speaker. The Spanish-speaking teacher teams with an English-speaking teacher. The students are mixed within the classroom. Approximately 50% of the students in the program are native English speakers and 50% of the students are native Spanish speakers. The students are partnered in what is called bilingual pairs. Research tells us that the results of a well designed dual language education program are outstanding for both English and Spanish speakers.
